I sense the meme is strong with this year’s cohort.
The hole dug by the peasants allude to a greater symbolic theme than the simplistic nature of this story would suggest. Despite the cartoonish story featuring talking animals, the story actually tells a compelling theme of class warfare. The fox and hedgehog both represent the bourgeoisie, while the hole dug by the peasants represents attempts at a revolution by the proletariat. The fox is unable to adapt to the changing circumstances, and is overthrown in glorious revolution by the proletariat in a way similar to that of Nicholas II of Russia and Jiang Jieshi (I refuse to use the imperialist Wade-Giles system). The hedgehog, however, quashes the revolution by manipulating other bourgeois imperialists to his advantage. Therefore, the lesson to the proletariat is that to establish a workers society and overthrow the imperialists, it is not enough to eradicate the false consciousness of the working class. We must also pit the tyrannical robber barons against one another and divide the bourgeoisie, so that the proletariat shall triumph over our oppressors and establish a utopian workers’ society.
